TABS

This one Gerry posted earlier

Ok, one of my biggest annoyances with FF2 is the scrolling tab bar. Here's how to get rid...

Go to C:Documents and SettingsxxxxxxApplication DataMozillaFirefoxProfilesyyyyyyy.defaultchro me (where xxxxx is your username and yyyyy is just random alphanumeric chars.

You'll see a file called userChrome-example.css, rename this to userChrome.css

Open it with a text editor and paste the following lines at the bottom

#bookmarks-ptf {display:block}
#bookmarks-ptf toolbarseparator {display:inline}

As you add bookmarks, the panel will grow to fit them.

Remember [F11] Toggles full screen on and off. Get used to using it and it will increase your enjoyment on the web.

Additional Google searchbox functions:

You may have noticed that as you type search terms into the Google search box in the top right hand corner, that Firefox makes suggestions as to what it thinks you may be looking for. If does this by continually feeding what you are typing to Google and forming a suggestion list from the results. Very handy indeed.

WHat you may not know is that this also works for the Google calculator tool. If you enter 5 + 7, Firefox will reply = 12. It's a bit more clever than just basic sums too... try 64 miles in km, FF will respond = 102.998016 kilometers, or 0b11001111 in decimal, to which FF will reply = 207. It'll pretty much convert anything to anything else, even daft stuff like furlongs and hogsheads (so I'm sure Abe Simpson will find it useful). It even knows the answer to life the universe and everything

Shortcuts:

With many pages opened in tabs, use CTRL followed by a number to switch to the corresponding tab in your browser
ie. CTRL followed by 2 to switch to the second tab etc etc.

Also just discovered that the icon to the left of the address in the address bar can be dragged into the bookmarks menu or bookmarks toolbar to creat a bookmark there directly (you can then right click to rename if u like)

Save space in your bookmarks toolbar by right-clicking bookmarks with easily recognisable icons (such as YouTube) - go to properties and delete the name.

For gammy-mincered-moley-types like meself (those who wear glasses)
CTRL followed by + enlarges the text of the current web page (current tab only)
CTRL followed by - reduces text
CTRL followed by 0 resets text size to default.

Of course the change is not remembered when surfing away from the page and then back to it, but it does remain when tabbing.

The Firebug extension for Mozilla Firefox allows the debugging, editing, and monitoring of any website's CSS, HTML, DOM, and JavaScript, and provides other web development tools. Firebug's official website has a complete guide to what it can do.

Firebug was written by Joe Hewitt, one of the original Firefox creators.

The Firebug plugin YSlow is a web development tool and analyzes web pages and tells you why they're slow based on the rules for high performance web sites. It offers

  • Performance report card
  • HTTP/HTML summary
  • List of components in the page
  • Tools including JSLint

Grease Monkey:

 From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Greasemonkey is a Mozilla Firefox extension that allows users to install scripts that make on-the-fly changes to most HTML-based web pages. As Greasemonkey scripts are persistent, the changes made to the web pages are executed every time the page is opened, making them effectively permanent for the user running the script.

Greasemonkey can be used for adding new functionality to web pages (for example, embedding price comparison in Amazon.com web pages), fixing rendering bugs, combining data from multiple webpages, and numerous other purposes. Well-written Greasemonkey scripts can integrate changes so well that their additions appear to be natural parts of the web page.

  Screenshot of the BookBurro user script running in Greasemonkey. BookBurro alters an amazon.com page to show the prices of the same book offered by competing retailers.
