Galway Social Space Association (GSSA) is a broad based collective of individual and groups who came together in October 2007 to work towards establishling an independent community run social space for Galway.

The social space will provide a means for people to come together, express themselves, discuss and debate ideas, share information, learn, take time out and contribute skills that will enhance and expand the community. This might include art exhibitions, talks, workshops, poetry readings, film nights, DJ classes, skill sharing events and specific outreach and support projects for marginalised communities.

The 'social space' concept is popular in many European countries but is only starting to take root in Ireland where a focus on private property and wealth, and the lack of provision of accessible public infrastructure has made it difficult to develop. However, GSSA, taking inspiration from similar initiatives in Cork, Dublin, Belfast and Leitrim, seeks to change this and provide a much needed avenue for building community relations and positive social change.

Our principles

In achieving this, GSSA adheres to the following principles, which provide a framework for survival and success.

·    Independent from commercial, political and religious forces
·    Participatory decision making where members are involved in setting up and maintaining the social space and protecting its ethos
·    Not for financial profit
·    Inclusive of all people from diverse backgrounds and perspectives
·    Accessibility for people and groups that are marginalised
·    Cooperation and mutual respect
·    Fun
·    Focus on promoting social justice and positive social change
·    Maintaining a Galway/West of Ireland identity …………….

Join us: weekly meetings

GSSA meet each Wednesday at 8pm (call/text/email… for venue info) and meetings are open to all and welcoming of new people and ideas.

Meetings centre around the search for a physical space to establish our base but also touch on fundraising, outreach, communications and decision making. We aim to involve and utilise a diversity of talents and skills, from carpentry to cooking, art design and databases, fundraising to financial management.

  • Mark Jenkins's public sculptures of mannequins in distress
Sculptor Mark Jenkins's "City" series is comprised of lifelike mannequins placed in public spaces in odd postures, often in seeming distress or danger, usually with a broadly humorous undertone. They're pretty funny stuff. Shown here: "Barcelona Trashgirl." City (via kikirikipics)

  • Reading lamps made from drilled-out books
Typewriter Boneyard does a sweet line of reading lamps made from drilled-out old books, fitted with replica Edison bulbs. Hardback Book Lamps (via Neatorama)

  • Excerpt from The Information Diet, by Clay Johnson
Clay Johnson is the author of The Information Diet: A Case for Conscious Consumption, which has been getting a lot of media attention lately: Weekend Edition, Triangulation, Atlantic, The Wirecutter, to name a few. I haven't read it yet, because I'm too busy consuming other sources of information. But it's...
